In the first hour of the Cabrillo College job fair, 400 students showed up, 100 more than
the entire event last year.
Cabrillo student Daniel Carmona 19, stopped at the MBS Business Systems table, took a
flyer and said, “I like it, it’s good to have a lot of perspectives.”
“The Army table got more to me, the benefits mostly, lots of benefits you can get out of
it, and what you can do in it.”, Carmona said.
The job fair, held April 19, was for recruiting and informing students about possible
summer jobs. The event began at 10:30 a.m. and ended at 1:30 p.m., just as students transitioned
to and from afternoon classes.
Student Employment Coordinator Desh Staley-Raatior, whose office organized the event,
said, “I’m just excited to have the students have the opportunities, and to be able to explore
different career options, and get them moving in their career path.”
The job fair was was in the upper quad- near the coffee hut for the second year. The 60
tables came with a wide range of internships, full- and part-time positions.
Carmen Palacios 21, another student who was checking out a few tables before class
said,“ I talked to a catering company and winery.” Palacios said, “They’re a family-owned
business and I think that stood out to me because my family owned a catering business as well,
so I’m familiar with that. I also think it makes the work environment much more beneficial when
you’re around people you trust and get along with.
“They’re very kind. I think that their goal as a company being a family own small
business is something that I appreciate, and I’m sure a lot of other people do.”
The booths, mostly by local businesses, included careers from the county of Santa Cruz,
nearby cities. Others included The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, UCSC.
The employers put out different things to attract students, from posters, cookies, candy,
games such as cornhole, stickers and other merchandise advertising their business.
The Student Employment booth navigated the students providing them with a map, tips
and a student evaluation that they could turn in a for a raffle. There would be a resume lab on
May 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. in SAC West 202, to start or update a current resume. For more
information about the event you can visit them in the office or their website at www.
