The Cabrillo College women’s soccer team faced off against a top ranked crew on Tuesday, fighting back an aggressive offense that eventually deteriorated in the second half, leading to a loss.
From the start of the match, it was clear both teams were eager to seize control. However, the Rams from the City College of San Francisco (CCSF) showcased their offensive skills throughout the entirety of the game. Despite this, Cabrillo’s spirit remained strong.
The match was marked by aggressive play styles, with tripping, shoving and falls becoming routine play styles as the minutes dragged on.
In a standout moment, Seahawks #7, Savannah Creswell, displayed impressive footwork and effort, invigorating the crowd with roars and hollers. However, the rough play took its toll, as Creswell found herself shoved out of bounds and later injured during a scuffle for the ball.
Cabrillo’s players worked hard to maintain their defensive effort, with goalkeeper Olivia Iturria in top form making several key saves, including a dramatic block just before the 30-minute mark. As the first half progressed, Cabrillo struggled to cross midfield until the 32nd-minute mark.
Fans echoed the team’s resilience at halftime when the score was 0-0.
“I think Cabrillo is doing a really good job, holding San Francisco to zero. They are one of the top, if not the top, team in the conference,” said the mother of player #7, Danielle Cresswell.
“Our defensive line is certainly coming up, poking the ball away and being aggressive,” she said.
Ernesto Flores, the father of player #4, Anely Flores, noted, “The girls are putting in amazing effort and good work.”
He highlighted the need for more substitutes, emphasizing, “Hopefully in the future they have more players that are available so that there’s more people being subbed in and out of the game so that they don’t get as tired.”
In the second half, Cabrillo came out with renewed energy. The intensity of the game resonated with the fans, who cheered for every play. But despite their efforts, the Seahawks ultimately lost the match 4-0. With this loss, the Seahawks record now stands at 3 wins, 10 losses and 1 tie, while CCSF has an impressive record of 10 wins, one loss and two ties.
“I think we put up a really, really good fight,” said #17, Jocelyn Carkner. “We were very low on numbers, and I am really proud of us all for working so hard.”
Cabrillo’s players expressed pride in their performance after the game.
“We had that dog in us in the first half,” Goalkeeper Iturria reflected. “I think in the second half, we kind of lost our tone for a second, but then we remembered who we were.”
Although the Seahawks didn’t secure a victory, their resilience and teamwork stood out.
Cresswell stated, “Even though we have lower numbers than we want, everyone that can play is fighting their butts off. That’s what matters at the end.”
As they prepare for the next home game on Friday against Gavilan, the team expressed eagerness for continued support.
“Come support your lady Seahawks,” Cresswell said, reflecting the spirit and determination that define this resilient team.
