Cabrillo College will be buzzing with excitement on Saturday as the second annual pumpkin patch opens to the public. Families and friends from the community are invited to celebrate the fall season and support the horticulture department, which is hosting the event.
As attendees stroll through the vibrant rows of pumpkins, they’ll find a wide selection perfect for carving or decorating.
“We will be selling a variety of pumpkins and winter squashes, for example, Delicata, Honey Nut and Kabocha,” said Patrick Evans, farm manager.
While the community enjoys the thrill of searching for their ideal pumpkin, they can take in the crisp autumn air and the festive atmosphere filled with the sounds of laughter and excitement.
Evans works closely with the organic farming teachers on-campus, and shares his passion for the growing process.
“My favorite part is watching the plants grow. They start off as these little seeds and then they take over the whole field,” he said. “It’s fun to see.”
“The students do all the work,” he added. “There will be students leading tours of the facility, clipping the stems of the pumpkins, pulling all the winter squash out of the fields to harvest and carving rows to create walkways for the community.”
Attending the event is a way for people to see the growing season in action, he said.
Throughout the day, there will be other activities for all ages, like the additional plant sale. Plus, students receive discounts of $5 off each item up to a total of $30 at the patch.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the horticulture department. Learn more information on their website.
