The Cabrillo College Seahawks travelled to Redding over the weekend to compete in the Shasta Tournament and returned with a win, a loss and a cancelled game because of the bad air quality.
Cabrillo 64, Siskiyous 59
The Seahawks (3-2, 0-0) defeated the College of the Siskiyous Eagles (0-6, 0-0) in the first game played on Nov. 16.
The six-point lead the Seahawks held at the half withstood a second-half surge that saw the Eagles outscore Cabrillo 36-35.
Cabrillo’s Avery Edwards, a sophomore center/forward from Gary, Indiana, filled up the stat sheet scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds, blocking three shots, dishing out two assists and stealing a pass.
Guard Trey Whitley, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, led Cabrillo with 14 points, four assists and five free throws. Whitley shot three for seven from beyond the arc and ranks 14th in the state in three-point shots made.
Cabrillo-Diablo Valley Canceled
Cabrillo’s second game of the tournament against the Diablo Valley Vikings was cancelled because of poor air quality.
Santa Rosa J.C. 64, Cabrillo 51
The Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs (5-1, 0-0) came back from a four-point deficit at the break to outscore the Seahawks 34-17 in the second half.
Davon Northcutt, a sophomore forward from Aptos, led Cabrillo with 13 points. Northcutt also snatched four rebounds to go along with a steal and assist.
Gabe Mack, a freshman guard from Milwaukee, scored eight points off the bench, including a pair of three-pointers. Mack made 50 percent of his three-point attempts during the tournament.
