The Cabrillo men’s soccer season has officially kicked off, and is already more than three games in. As the Seahawks are running into the new season, head coach Paolo Carbone believes the team has more potential this year than last.
“They’ve been through the process already for one whole season… so on paper, we should do better,” Carbone said.
As most college sports teams change every year, Cabrillo’s has pretty much stayed the same. Most of the players are second years, so even though there aren’t as many players this year, Carbone said it’s higher quality ball.
“Last year we had more players but less depth… this year we have less players; last year we had 34, this year we have 23, but our quality is better,” he said.
Many of the boys have played with each other for years, either on the same team or against each other. This season marks another year.
But the team has had a slow start to the season — their only win so far was the opening match versus American River College, besting them 2-0. The other three matches have been close losses, 1-0 versus Folsom Lake, 1-0 versus Clovis and 2-1 versus Santa Rosa Junior College.
“Even though we played well and played most of the game in the opponent’s half, we managed to lose the game 1-0… when you get opportunities you need to put them away,” Carbone said of the team’s recent losses.
The season is still early and the Seahawks have many more opportunities to nab some wins — 15 more games until playoffs start in November.
The next match is Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m. versus Fresno City College. Check out the full schedule!
