Cabrillo’s news production class (also known as JOURN-54A-54C) has been shut down due to low enrollment, according to an email from Division Administrative Assistant Lizett Zuñiga Zamudio.
In her email, she explained that student enrollment in the class was not as strong as Cabrillo had hoped for, resulting in the class being cut until further notice.
“We hope that by cancelling now, it will give you an opportunity to move into other classes that have a better chance of running,” Zamudio wrote in her email.
Students who were enrolled in the news production class were notified about the shutdown via email on August 12, 12th 2025, just about two weeks before the start of Cabrillo’s Fall Semester on Aug 25, 2025. To students taking these classes, this notice seemed abrupt and unexpected, leaving those reporting for the Voice concerned about its future.
However, The Voice itself could remain intact just not as a class explained Dean of English, Library, and Language Arts Paul Allen.
“We have been reviewing the best ways to manage the publication so that it remains a strong learning experience for students and a valued resource for our community. This includes exploring different approaches to how student work on the paper is organized and how course credit is awarded,” Allen wrote in an email.
“As these plans take shape, we will share updates. Our goal is to ensure that the Voice continues to give students meaningful opportunities to develop their skills and publish their work,” he added.
Class advisor and Journalism Department Chair, Alexandria Bordas, has not responded to comment after multiple attempts.
