Student Senate Elections 2025 Voting Through May 1.
Cabrillo College’s Student Senate elections are set to begin on Monday, April 28, with online voting available through Thursday, May 1, at 3 p.m. In-person voting stations will also be open on the Aptos and Watsonville campuses throughout the week. This election is an opportunity for students to choose their next leaders, who will represent them in the Student Senate for the coming year.
Andrew Richmond, Cabrillo’s Health and Wellness Ambassador and the Elections Chair, provided a rundown of the election process.
“The election process started with students submitting their candidate statements and campaigning for two weeks leading up to the election,” Richmond explained. He added that voting will be conducted online, but there will also be in-person booths on both campuses for students who prefer to vote that way.
The voting system now requires students to enter their student ID numbers to ensure the integrity of the process.
“One thing I was really passionate about was requiring the student IDs because it wasn’t required last year,” Richmond said. This new measure is designed to prevent voter fraud and ensure that each student votes only once. The IT department will also be monitoring the voting process to check for duplicates and any outside interference.
In-person voting booths will be available on the Aptos campus on Monday and Tuesday, April 28 and 29, near the Crocker Theater, the library and by the STEM Center. For the remainder of the week, voting will move to the Watsonville campus, where booths will be set up in front of the main office on Wednesday and Thursday, April 30 and May 1.
To run for a position in the Student Senate, students must meet certain qualifications. They must be enrolled in at least five units and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Candidates are also limited to spending $50 on their campaigns and posting no more than 20 flyers across campus. This ensures that the election process remains fair and accessible to all students.
One of the most anticipated races is for Student Senate president. Vivianna Moreno, the current Vice President of the Student Senate, is campaigning for the position. Moreno has been actively involved in student government and is passionate about making the Senate more accessible to all students.
“I joined the Student Senate because I wanted to become more active on campus and also to be able to give students a voice,” Moreno said. She expressed her desire to improve communication between the Senate and the student body.
“I feel like there’s a lot of disconnection between the Senate and the students,” she said. “I really want to change that.”
Moreno hopes to introduce regular “senator talks,” where students can meet Senate members in an informal setting, share their concerns and offer suggestions for how to improve campus life. “I want students to feel like their voices are heard,” Moreno explained. “I want to be accessible to all students and make sure everyone feels included.”
In addition to her presidential campaign, other students are also running for positions in the Senate. Róise O’Connor, the current Treasurer; George Little, a Senator-at-Large; and Arturo Marquez, another Senator-at-Large, are among the candidates.
Richmond, who is graduating this semester and transferring to pursue a degree in psychology, encouraged students to get involved with student government, regardless of whether they are voting or running for a position.
“You can always stop by the Welcome Center and ask about joining,” Richmond said. “There are so many ways to get involved, and it’s a great way to have a positive impact on your campus.”
As students prepare to cast their votes, this election marks an important moment for the Cabrillo College community. Whether students vote online or in person, their participation will help determine the direction of student leadership for the upcoming year.
