In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, students at Cabrillo are digging deep into the horticulture program, where they’re not just learning to nurture plants but also grow a greener future for their communities.
The horticulture program stands as a lively center of innovation and sustainability, offering students a diverse curriculum that includes 15 unique classes, such as Propagation, Irrigation, Soil Science, Greenhouse Design, Hydroponics, and more. Each course is thoughtfully designed to equip students with the essential skills for successful careers in environmental caretaking, encouraging both technical knowledge and a passion for the environment. Nicky Hughes, the propagation teacher, notes that her students are highly engaged with both the class and the material they’re studying.
Students like Jack Thranow, a horticulture major, express their appreciation for the class and their teacher, who shares her extensive knowledge.
“I’m still figuring out what I want to do in the future, but I hope it’s something that involves plants,” said Thranow.
While some of Hughes’s students are still exploring their career paths, she explained that others have already begun thriving in the local agricultural industry.
Jasmine Garcia, a second-year student, is currently working at a seed company in Watsonville. Her hands-on experience in the industry has deepened her understanding of plant cultivation and sustainable practices.
Jasmine reflects on her journey, stating,
“I’m hoping to transfer to California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and eventually become an assistant grower, working in greenhouses.”
With a strong foundation from the horticulture program, she is prepared to make a meaningful impact in the field of sustainable agriculture.
As the horticulture program continues to grow a new generation of environmental caretakers, the passion and dedication of students like Jack Thranow and Jasmine Garcia exemplify its impact. Their experiences not only reflect the knowledge gained in the classroom but also the broader mission of creating a sense of sustainability and community engagement.
Ultimately, Cabrillo’s horticulture program equips students with essential skills for their future careers while inspiring them to make a positive difference in the world around them. By developing a deep connection to nature and promoting sustainable practices, these students are well on their way to becoming leaders in the agricultural industry and advocates for a greener planet.
