The newly elected treasurer for student senate is Roise O’Connor, a role that sat vacant for months.
O’Connor, a theater major, won this year’s contest by just six votes – 78 to 72 – over Jared Keith.
“ I wanted to be treasurer because I want senate money used in ways that directly benefit students,” she said.
O’Conner said it’s been a slow comeback to student life since the pandemic, and her goal is to continue bringing the community together by offering more on-campus events.
The treasurer position has been vacant since Feb. 22. Alta Cicilia Northcutt, director of the Cabrillo Welcome Center and faculty chair of student senate, temporarily oversaw the budget.
With a budget of $27,000 allocated for the 2024-25 school year, and $7,000 available to clubs that request funding, O’Connor said the student senate has the resources it needs to create student engagement.
As treasurer, O’Connor said for Cabrillo College to thrive clubs should use the funding the senate provides to create more club run student events to engage the community as a whole.
“In a perfect world every dollar we have allocated for students will go to students,” O’Connor said.
