Lube, lube and more lube… There are four main types of lubricant, water-based, silicone, oil and hybrids each having their own perks and downsides. Water-based, there are two types of water-based lube which are liquid and gel.
Water-based liquid is very thin and feels almost like slippery water. It’s typically what people start using when they are first starting to use lubricant because it feels most natural to the body like pre-cum and vaginal fluids.
Water-based gel, these are thicker than water-based liquid which serves many purposes, it lasts longer because the body can’t absorb the gel as fast. It’s good for any water play like shower or bath. Water-based lubricant gel or liquid is also all around safe, for anal, oral, penetration, toys and condoms. You never have to worry if it’s not compatible with something so it’s definitely the safest option.
Silicone is the lube that you will never have to re-apply. It’s the slickest and the body absorbs it the slowest. Silicone is best for long sessions, anal play and if you don’t like to re-apply lube. The catch with this is it’s not toy safe. You typically want to steer clear of silicone lube with silicone toys, as a chemical reaction will happen and the lube will create micro holes in the silicone of the toy. Leaving your toy and body at a very high risk of infection.
Oil typically means coconut oil but I’ve heard of others being used. The perks of using an oil is it’s typically the most natural, vegan option so if you’re more on the holistic side this might be a good option for you. It also can double as a massage oil, so win-win. The downside is you never want to use any type of oil with condoms, the oils will rapidly degrade the latex of the condom and vastly increase your chances of the condom breaking.
Lastly is hybrids, this is a silicone, water-based mix. They look milky white and can be used with silicone toys because of the water component, but it is recommended to wash the toy directly after play just as a precaution. The perk of hybrids is that it feels pretty natural due to the water but lasts longer because of the silicone component.
Recommendations
Good brands of lubricants include “Sliquid”. They have water-based, hybrids and silicone lubricants. So whichever sounds best Sliquid has options for you. They are also gluten, glycerine, glycerol, and paraben-free, while also being vegan and hypoallergenic. Sliquid even has lubricants to help balance your Ph, so if you are prone to infections or imbalances this is definitely a brand to try.
The next would be called Uberlube which is a silicone-based lube. Fun fact: silicone-based lubes can also be used to shine up latex, taming frizziness in hair and used to reduce chafing during any exercise.
