Watsonville campus where students will have space to study outdoors

You can stop doing homework in your house

Are the walls of your bedroom closing in on you? Need to get schoolwork done, but can’t stand to be at home anymore? Cabrillo College is opening an in-person study area starting April 20 at Watsonville Center at 318 Union Street. Up to 25 students at a time will be able to use desks in the courtyard of the Solari Green Technology Center (Building D). Students will have space to study and access printers and WIFI for free for up to four hours.

Students should reserve space using Eventbrite on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. Walk-ups will be available if not all the desks have been reserved and there is no waitlist. A valid ID and a temperature check will be required for entry into the study space.

Parking on campus will be free in any of the Watsonville Center lots. Extension cords, printers and WIFI access will all be provided. Students must bring their own devices and headphones for online classes.

May 19 will be the program’s last day in spring semester. Tera Martin, who helped develop the plan, said staff will evaluate the program in summer and hope to expand hours in fall.

Cabrillo students have been learning from home for a year, and the college isn’t planning to return to in-person learning until spring 2022.“We have heard from many students how challenging it can be to participate in online learning at home,” said Martin, “We want students to be able to access WIFI and a safe, productive space where they can focus on their schoolwork and be able to access online support services.”

Masks will be required of students and staff at all times, and workstations will be cleaned after each use. Restrooms will be open to students, and the space is wheelchair accessible. Staff members will be on site to assist students with technical questions and to facilitate printing.

Creating an in-person study space at the Aptos campus is currently being discussed as well, said Kristin Fabos, Cabrillo’s public information officer.
