Cabrillo College sports are back

Last updated on April 7, 2021

Cabrillo College sports will resume after nearly a year of no competition, starting with men’s and women’s soccer on Thursday, March 4.

Athletics will be split into two groups; Spring 1 will be fall sports, and Spring 2 will be spring sports. The start date was supposed to be Jan. 28, but got pushed back to March because of the stay at home order.

“We’ve been working hard to have something for our athletes whether that be testing or helping with classes,” said Mark Ramsey, Cabrillo athletic director.

There will be no football this semester, and volleyball is still putting together its schedule.

All Cabrillo teams are meeting outdoors for safety precautions, even indoor sports. Ramsey said this last year has had “a huge impact on the student athletes’ mental health, not getting to compete and advance.”

Cabrillo “has put into place a rigid safety protocol.” said Ramsey. “Every morning the whole athletic department takes an online survey from (the app) Healthy Roster to determine if they are clean to come to campus and then get their temperature taken upon arrival.”

High risk outdoor sports have to be tested once a week and 48 hours before competition. While high risk indoor sports will have to be tested three times per week. If it’s a low to moderate risk outdoor sport like tennis only 25% to 50% of athletes need to be tested.

“If we have a positive case we follow the school guidelines to shut down that group for a two-week period and mitigate that group as much as possible,” said Ramsey.

Physical education classes that are still open include yoga and pickleball. Outdoor basketball and outdoor soccer were canceled for lack of enrollment.

“Kinesiology has had a huge decline, while student athlete numbers have been relatively good.” said Ramsey.

The Student Health Center is remaining open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week.

Men’s and women’s soccer will play at Las Positas College in Livermore on Thursday. The men play at noon, the women at 2:30 p.m.
