Cabrillo Board To Vote On Future Of Football Program

Last updated on May 16, 2021

Cabrillo College trustees will vote in May whether the football program will continue, after it was suspended for two seasons because of improperly signed leases for players.

Cabrillo trustees decided in spring 2020 to suspend the football program for 2020 and 2021.

During an initial investigation, the Cabrillo board found football players  were getting improper benefits, which violated junior college rules. Coaches were signing leasing agreements for a select few out-of-state players which is not allowed.

A committee of Cabrillo staff members recommends that the program should be brought back.

The program was forced to forfeit its 2019 season, canceling the school’s best season in 20 years, with a 8-3 record.

“I was really disheartened by the findings. We have a lot of pride in cabrillo athletics.” said Mark Ramsey, the Cabrillo athletic director.

The board will make further decisions on the future of the football program on May 10. Trustees will also make decisions on what coaches will be allowed to come back and who will not.

“I think having a good football program is a benefit to the community.” Ramsey said.
