“Lets go Seahawks” is now the big thought going through people’s heads as the Cabrillo board voted on Monday for a return of football after a two-year absence.
The trustees voted unanimously to see the football program resume in the fall of 2022. The trustees decided in spring 2020 to suspend the football program for 2020 and 2021.
An investigation found some players were getting improper benefits. Coaches were signing leasing agreements for a select few out-of-state players, which violated junior college rules.
“I was really disheartened by the findings,” said Athletic Director Mark Ramsey, in an April interview. “We have a lot of pride in Cabrillo athletics.” Ramsey was present at the board’s Zoom meeting, but did not speak.
The program was forced to forfeit its 2019 season, canceling the school’s best season in 20 years, with a 8-3 record.
“I think having a good football program is a benefit to the community.” Ramsey said.
A football review committee had recommended resumption. That committee will now oversee the program.
