Are you an aspiring poet at Cabrillo who’s been looking for like-minded artists? Then make sure to check out the Journal X celebration event on May 9, being held at the Watsonville Center.
The event will be held between 6:00 to 8:00 PM in room A130, featuring live speakers and a screening of a film by local filmmaker Ignacio Muñoz.
According to the Journal’s editor, Dr. Will Mullaney, attendees should anticipate hearing a variety of poems, a short film screening, along with a Q&A event and an award ceremony.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Journal X is rooted in Watsonville and it’s student body, as the event will be hosted there at Cabrillo.
According to Dr Mullaney, Journal X is the Watsonville-centered literary publication, featuring local writers from around the city.
“We have professors who’ve been teaching in the Watsonville center for 30 years, so there’s an intersection of people who are really involved in the community,” Mullaney said.
He went on to elaborate on Watsonville being a place with a large Latino community, and the journal has a big focus on the language aspect, switching between English and Spanish, sometimes with a mix of both.
In regards to the short film by Muñoz, Mullaney said.
“It highlights some of the cultural elements, like a Chicano vision of his (Muñoz’s) grandparents’ relationship”.
