Cabrillo President Matt Wetstein
Vaccinations may
be required
Most Cabrillo students won’t be returning
to classrooms until Spring 2022 and may be required to be vaccinated for the
coronavirus, said school President Matt Wetstein.
“The plan is for this spring (2021) to
continue with mostly online,” said Wetstein in a recent Zoom interview. “The
same for the summer, because we don’t know how quickly the vaccination rollout
will become more universal and getting closer to what’s called herd immunity,
and even going into the fall right now, the plan is to continue with mostly
online classes.”
The president couldn’t give students or staff definite answers to when Cabrillo would return in such uncertain times as most people had hoped. “The real failure of the prior (Trump) administration to do national planning on that score has hampered our ability to be thinking about returning fully in the fall,” said Wetstein, “Spring of 2022 is probably when we’re back to quote-unquote normal.”

If anyone wants Cabrillo to return to the
in-person format, it is this man who is losing students faster than you can say
Zoom. Wetstein said enrollment is down 18% from Spring 2020.
Cabrillo students could be required to take the vaccine before returning to in-person classes. “Most colleges in our system in California are going to require students to have proof of vaccination to enroll in public schools.”

Vaccinations could be an issue for some
students, especially those without private health insurance. “Right now, we do not have vaccinations planned for students. We
have *testing* for students through the student health service.” Wetstein said,
“Current plans for a vaccination clinic are for the college to work with the
County Office of Education to vaccinate all county educators and staff.”
